Sparrows Getting Nesting in the Vents in Spring Lake, NJ

This homeowner in Spring Lake, NJ, kept hearing "chirping" in one of his bathrooms and was concerned that his had a bird nesting in his home! He contacted Bird Solutions by Cowleys and we were sent out. As we inspected the exterior of the property, we noticed that one of the exhaust vents seemed to be damaged and was missing a cover. When we took a closer look, we found a sparrow and its nest inside the vent!

To safely remove the sparrow, we installed a one-way device over the vent. This will allow the sparrow to safely leave the area, but prevent them from getting back in. The best part of the one-way device is that, if there are young birds inside, the adult female will still be able to feed them through the flap until they leave. After a short period of time, we returned to the home and discovered that the sparrow had left the property for good.

After we removed our one-way device, we carefully disinfected the vent with an application that targets and eliminates bird mites. Bird mites are parasites that feed on the blood of birds and when birds leave their nests, the mites are left behind without a suitable host for their next blood meal. They will make their way into a home, and once inside they will take over, climbing all over your walls, ceilings, and beddings. To make matters worse, bird mites are tiny and semi-transparent, so they are extremely difficult to detect!

To prevent any future infestations from sparrows, or any other nuisance birds, we installed DryerWallVent®. The DryerWallVent® is made out of heavy-duty galvanized steel and its large opening and angled damper provide maximum airflow efficiency for safe venting. Integrated magnets keep the damper closed when not in use, preventing pests, bats, birds, and all nuisance wildlife from infesting the home.

Installing New Door Sweeps to Exclude the Rodents in Oceanport, NJ

This customer in Oceanport, NJ, had a problem with rodents infesting her business. How were they getting in? Through a large gap underneath the two front doors. After our Pest Control team came out and successfully removed all the rodents from the property, we were called out to prevent them from getting back in.

To do that, we installed an Xcluder® Rodent Proof Door Sweep underneath each door. Xcluder® door sweeps feature Xcluder fill fabric, providing a barrier impenetrable to rodents and other pests, along with a durable weather seal that can pay for itself in energy savings. Now the rodents are properly excluded from the front entrance of the building.

Replacing the Attic Insulation with ComfortTherm® in Avon by the Sea, NJ

A short while ago, this client in Avon by the Sea, NJ had a raccoon infest his attic. Although our Little Rascals Nuisance Wildlife team safely removed and relocated the raccoon to a new, humane location, it had defecated all over the attic and contaminated the insulation. So we were sent out to clean the area and install new insulation.

First, we're going to remove all the contaminated insulation from the attic and dispose of it. Next, we disinfected the area and then installed ComfortTherm® insulation. ComfortTherm® insulation provides excellent temperature and noise control, and comes with a vapor-retarder for use in hot, humid climates.

Excluding Birds from the Attic in Rumson, NJ

After we successfully and safely removed all the birds from this homeowners' attic in Rumson, NJ, we need to make sure they don't get back in. Since the gable vent that the birds were using to infest the building was damaged, we removed it, disinfected the area, and installed a louvered vent guard. This material is made out of heavy-duty Galvannealed steel (which means it won't rust) and is customized to accommodate vents of all shapes and sizes. Now the home is properly protected from not just birds, but all nuisance wildlife and pests!

Encapsulating a Dirt Floor Crawl Space in Rumson, NJ

After moving into their new home in Rumson, NJ, the first thing these new homeowners wanted to do was encapsulate their dirt floor crawl space. So they gave our Crawl Space Division a call and we were sent out! Dirt floor crawl spaces attract and absorb moisture and once the dirt dries, it causes humidity levels to rise and can lead to mold and mildew issues (fortunately, there was no mold or mildew in the crawl space).

First, we removed all the debris and old insulation, leveled the ground for proper draining and installed drainage matting, which is a dimpled plastic mat that allows all excess moisture to work its way over to the sump pump. Afterward, we installed a vapor barrier. A vapor barrier is a heavy-duty, 20-mil 7-ply sandwich of high and low-density polyethylene with a polyester-cord reinforcement. By encapsulating the crawl space & installing the vapor barrier over the foundation walls and floor will create a continuous air and moisture barrier.

The vapor barrier is extremely durable and is treated with an antimicrobial to prevent mold. We also cleaned off all the beams in the crawl space and installed SilverGlo™ on the walls of the crawl space. SilverGlo™ is a waterproof foam insulation that seals the walls from outside moisture and humidity. Lastly, we installed a Sani-Dry Sedona commercial-grade dehumidifier. The Sedona directs the extracted water pulled out of the air directly into the sump pump and will control the humidity levels in the crawl space.
