Wildlife Removal Photo Album: Faulty Attic Fan Installation Leads to Raccoon in the Attic in Hazlet, NJ
A homeowner in Hazlet, NJ decided it was time to replace his old attic fan with a new one. Unfortunately, only a few days after it was installed, a raccoon invaded his attic.
Something Amiss
After a thorough inspection, I found no other access points around the home and decided to take a closer look at the new attic fan. It appeared to be installed properly, however, something seemed odd...
Vinyl Wiring
One look and I found the problem - the wiring on the attic fan is made of vinyl, which a raccoon can easily rip apart. This means that the attic fan wasn't installed correctly with the proper material.
Attic Fan Cover
Instead of the homeowner spending additional time and money removing and replacing the attic fan, the best course of action was to install an attic fan cover. The attic fans we use are made out of poly-coated welded wire for strength & durability. This will prevent any nuisance wildlife from entering.
Positively Set
I cut a small hole in the attic fan cover where the main access point is and set up a positive set directly over it. A positive set is a nose cone that safely guides the raccoon directly into a heavy duty, two-gated trap. I also placed a baited trap nearby.
A Matter of Time
It's called a positive set because we are positive that only the targeted nuisance wildlife (the raccoon) will enter the device. Once it does, I'll relocate it to a humane location, sanitize the attic area and then seal up the hole in attic fan cover.
