Raccoons Damage Attic in Keyport, NJ

Challenge

We were called out to a home in Keyport, NJ because the owner detected a really bad smell and kept hearing noises in the walk-up attic of her home. The attic part was unfinished on both sides of the bedroom, and only at the very front of the home. So we equipped our personal protective equipment and crawled through a narrow side part of the attic to the front bigger unfinished area. Once we got fully into the attic, we found raccoon scat everywhere and the insulation was completely urine-soaked, creating this horrific smell in the home!

Solution

We installed a Comstock device in front of the main access point, enclosed the area off temporarily with hardware cloth, and set up several baited devices nearby. A Comstock device is a heavy-duty, two-gaited device with a wire trigger made out of galvanized wire mesh. A short while later, we safely retrieved the raccoon, we will now relocate it to a new, humane location.

In the meantime, we removed all the contaminated insurance, disinfected the attic area, sealed up the access point with sturdy metal flashing, and replaced all the contaminated insulation with TruSoft blown-in cellulose insulation.
