Sun Damaged Dryer Vent Causes Squirrel Infestation in Toms River, NJ
Challenge
A homeowner in Toms River, NJ was having a problem with squirrels inside his home. As we inspected the home we noticed that the dryer exhaust vent appeared damaged and there were squirrel paw prints around the area. As we took a closer look, we noticed that the vent was in bad shape, not because of the squirrels, but because of the weather. This isn't uncommon as, over time, old exterior dryer exhaust vent covers and gable vents will suffer damage from the sun and the weather.
Solution
We temporarily enclosed the vent off with hardware cloth and installed a one-way device over it. This device allows the squirrel to safely leave the area but prevents it from getting back in. We also placed several baited devices nearby.
Once we safely retrieve the squirrel, we will relocate it to a new, humane environment, disinfect the area, and then install a Defender Dryer Vent Guard over the exhaust vent. This will prevent squirrels, nuisance birds, and other nuisance wildlife from infesting the home via the vent guard without restricting airflow.
