Squirrels chew their way into Atlantic Highlands, NJ home
Challenge
An Atlantic Highjands, NJ homeowner contacted Cowleys after seeing squirrels gain entry inside his home through a hole in the corner of some fascia and through a second hole in the soffit. Soffits and fascia are common entry points for squirrels once they are able to access the roof, especially if they are water-damaged or in need of repair.
Solution
To remedy this wildlife infestation, I installed a one-way device over the hole in the fascia and patched the hole in the soffit so that any squirrels inside had only one-exit point. A one-way permits the animals to leave, but prevents their return. It is important to not completely seal the animals inside the home or they will cause extensive damage trying to escape. Next, I set three baited traps to hopefully capture the squirrels and relocate them to a safer, more appropriate habitat and do not return and try to re-gain entry. Once the animals are out of the home, I’ll replace the one-way with a temporary patch until the homeowner can have the damaged fascia fixed permanently
