The Wasps Hanging on the Fascia in Morganville, NJ

As this customer in Morganville, NJ, was leaving for work one day, he gazed up at his home and spotted a large wasps nest on the fascia! Since he was a Home Protection Plan customer, he called Cowleys for help and we were sent out.

Since the wasp nest was high up, we grabbed our extendable pole, attached a knockdown aerosol application to it, and then liberally treated the nest. This treatment rapidly exterminates the wasps. A short while later, we removed the nest, disposed of it, and then applied a liquid residual application to this area. This product will eliminate any wasps that return to the area as well as prevent them from building another nest.

After spotting a flying squirrel entering his attic, this homeowner in Morganville, NJ immediately called Little Rascals for help and we were sent out. As we inspected the property, we discovered that the flying squirrels were able to gain access into the home by squeezing through the builders gap. A builder's gap is a gap between the fascia board and roof decking and it's caused when roof decking is stopped too short and isn't flush with the fascia. It's meant to help with airflow to the attic, but nuisance wildlife and pests view this as an open invitation into your property!

To safely retrieve the flying squirrels, we installed a positive set, temporarily enclosed the entire area off with hardware cloth, and set up several baited devices nearby. A positive set is comprised of a nose cone that is attached to a two-gaited, heavy-duty device and the nose cone will safely guide the flying squirrels into the device. It's called a positive set, because we are positive that the squirrels will enter the device.

A short while later, we retrieved the flying squirrels and relocated them to a new, humane and safe environment. We then removed our retrieval devices, disinfected the area, and installed trim coil over the entire length of the builder's gap to prevent any future infestations from squirrels or any other nuisance wildlife.

Replacing an Old & Broken Crawl Space Door in Morganville, NJ

Replacing an Old & Broken Crawl Space Door in Morganville, NJ Replacing an Old & Broken Crawl Space Door in Morganville, NJ

We were sent out to a home in Morganville, NJ to replace the broken crawl space door. The latch to the door was broken and barely hanging on, which lead to a mouse infestation in the crawl space. After our Pest Control technicians had performed a thorough rodent control service and removed the mice, we're going to exclude that area.

In order to accomplish that, we removed the old door and installed an Everlast™ door. An Everlast™ door is made from ½-in.-thick PVC plastic that will never warp, crack, shrink, require maintenance or painting and will prevent any unwanted pests and moisture from entering the crawl space. These covers, which can be installed against wood framing or masonry, close off outside air and moisture from entering the crawl space through the exterior vents. These covers not only work well, but are also aesthetically pleasing!

Stopping the Moles in the Backyard in Morganville, NJ

We were sent out to a new customers home in Morganville, NJ, to get a handle on the massive mole infestation in the customers backyard. There are two types of tunnels that moles dig. Travel tunnels and feeder tunnels. Travel tunnels are usually around a landscaped edge that’s long and relatively straight. Moles use them to travel from tunnel to tunnel as often as 3 times a day and they’re considered active tunnels. You can always tell where a travel tunnel is because the ground will feel soft to the touch. Feeder tunnels, on the other hand, look more like an above-ground spider web. They’re created as moles explore new feeding areas, and they’re often abandoned and inactive.

In order to effectively target the moles, we used our Burrow RX. The Burrow RX is a carbon monoxide device that uses a smoke-oil tracer that shows us where the majority of the carbon monoxide is going, how far we are reaching in the tunnels, and if there are any leaks. If we notice any leaks, we fill them in. The gas isn’t toxic to owners because we're outdoors in a well-ventilated area. Additionally, there’s no residual that is left behind, so the family is in no danger of getting a residue on them. The Burrow RX is much more humane than using a pesticide or a trap and it guarantees that we are eliminating the moles!

Termites Found in Our Monitoring Devices in Morganville, NJ

We returned to this home in Morganville, NJ for a follow up visit for fruit flies and as we checked our monitoring devices, we were shocked to find termite swarmers in the devices! As a precaution and at the owners request, we inspected the home from top to bottom to find any evidence of termites inside the home. We did not, but the homeowner wanted to have a termite treatment as a precaution.

For treatment, we drilled around the entire exterior of the property and injected a liquid termiticide. The termiticide binds to the treated area and creates a protective zone that the termites can't detect. The termites will come in contact with the termiticide as they go about their normal routines and transfer it throughout their colony. Now the home is properly protected from any future termite issues.

Making Sure the Bats Stay Out in Morganville, NJ

Bats had infested this home in Morganville, NJ through a small opening in the fascia board. After locating the main access point we sealed off a portion of it, left a small area open, and installed a bat cone over that area. The bat cone allows the bats to safely leave the area but prevents them from getting back in. Once all the bats were safely removed from the home, we installed sturdy metal flashing over the access point to prevent reinfestation.

We also noticed that the attic fans and static vents were potential access points for not just bats, but all nuisance wildlife and birds too. So we installed several attic fan covers over every attic fan and static vent. The attic fan cover is made out of heavy-duty 18 Gauge expanded Galvannealed steel mesh and will not only prevent bats from entering the home, but squirrels, birds, and raccoons too. Now the home is properly protected from nuisance wildlife.

Hornet Season Starting Early in Morganville, NJ

We were sent out to a new customer's home in Morganville, NJ to treat and remove a hornets nest. When we arrived, we found the soccer ball sized nest on the right side of the home underneath the fascia board, about two feet from the daughters bedroom window! What's worse is that the nest was full of angry bald-faced hornets. These insects are EXTREMELY aggressive and will not hesitate to sting anything that invades their space. Their stings carry venom that makes the stings hurt, itch, and swell for about 24 hours. Humans are at the same risk of allergic reactions from bald-faced hornet stings as with other insect stings. What makes them even scarier is they have smooth stingers, which means they can sting over and over again, can actually sense vibrations in the air, and remember their invader's face!

For treatment, we grabbed our extendable pole, attached a knockdown aerosol product to it, and then injected it into the nest. We then waited several moments and treated the nest with a knockdown liquid application. Both of these treatments rapidly exterminate the bald-faced hornets. After a short amount of time we removed the nest, disposed of it, and then treated the area with a residual application to eliminate any returning hornets as well as prevent them from building another nest.

Openings Around Utility Pipes Case Hornets to Infest Home in Morganville, NJ

While inspecting a new Home Protection Plan customers home in Morganville, NJ we found several large gaps around a number of utility pipes around the home. We took a closer look at one of them and several angry yellow jackets came flying out!

We quickly equipped our protective bee suit and treated the yellow jackets with a knockdown dusting application. This will rapidly exterminate the stinging insects. After several moments, we removed the nest and disposed of it. Lastly, we stuffed up all the openings with chew-proof metal mesh and sealed them with a premium adhesive.

Mice Infest Home Through Gap in the Roof in Morganville, NJ

A new customer in Morganville, NJ was having an issue with mice infesting his attic. We inspected the area and found mouse droppings throughout the insulation. During our inspection, we noticed that there were two gaps in the dormer that the mice were using to infest the attic.

We informed the homeowner, who then contacted a roofer to come out and repair those areas. In the meantime, we carefully cleaned the droppings and installed several rodent bait stations. We will return for several follow-up visits to monitor the infestation and replenish the bait stations as needed.

Clutter in Morganville, NJ leads to mice infestation.

Recently, I was sent to a home in Morganville, NJ to resolve a troublesome mouse infestation. Upon arrival, I immediately saw that there was a separate, potentially even more serious. The home had extensive clutter. The living space was filled to the point where it was difficult to safely maneuver around the home. While we all like to hold onto things, there comes a point where so-called hoarding can become a disorder when a person has extreme difficulty discarding or parting with some of their possessions, regardless of their value or how much they are actually used. The accumulation of clutter rendered this home’s living space virtually uninhabitable and dangerous to the home’s occupants.

In this case, this homeowner enjoyed finding bargains at flea markets and garage sales. This was a small home without much storage area. It had gotten to the point where the homeowner had to climb over boxes and items, making it challenging and dangerous to move around freely. Not surprisingly, all of the boxes and clutter became a haven for mice. The rodents had virtually unlimited hiding spots and they could move around the home and stay out of sight with ease.

For obvious reasons, I was concerned. I had to convince the homeowner to remove this clutter for reasons beyond the mouse infestation. Fortunately, having an objective third-party telling him that there was a clutter issue was all he needed. He understood that most of these items had to go in order to deal with the mouse problem and make his home safe once again. The homeowner agreed to clear out most of the “stuff,” and for me to return at a later date.

Upon return, there was significantly less clutter and I could effectively treat the rodent infestation. I used bait boxes, snap traps, and glue boards to monitor the level of rodent activity. With the reduced clutter and a rodent control program in place, this mouse infestation will be knocked-down in short order. Finally, I scheduled a follow-up visit to re-assess the level rodent activity and make adjustments to the treatment plan as necessary.

Carpenter bees removal and control in Morganville, NJ home

While conducting a routine home protection plan servicing, I discovered staining on the siding of the home. Homeowners are often unaware of infestations outside their home or in non-living areas like crawl spaces and attics. Our periodic residential protection plan inspections often uncover these “hidden” problems, allowing us to get them resolved in their early stages before there is significant property damage.

From past experience, I immediately recognized this type of staining. This home had an active carpenter bee infestation. These large bees resemble bumble bees, except they have shiny black bodies instead of the familiar “fuzzy” look of bumble bees. During the early spring, carpenter bees will start swarming to find mates. After mating, the female will bore a hole into soft wood, making a chamber to lay her eggs. In home exteriors, we often find carpenter bee bore holes in behind facia boards. Because fascia boards are near the roof line and gutters are attached to them, they are prone to water-damage and wood rot, making them attractive nesting locations to carpenter bees and other wood-boring insects (not to mention a favorite of squirrels, raccoons, and other wildlife to gain access to the attic!).

Besides the actual holes, evidence of carpenter bee activity include sawdust piles (called “frass”) and staining nearby the holes from their droppings. Unfortunately, carpenter bees often return every year to the same area of the home because of a pheromone left in the egg chamber. We eliminate these bee infestations for the current year by using either a liquid or dust application.
