Pests We Treat - Fly Light Works Wonders at Commercial Facility in Brielle, NJ
Controlling a fly infestation that has taken hold inside a commercial business, like this one in Brielle, NJ, can be a daunting task. Fly infestations are more than an annoyance — they are a health hazard, especially for sanitation-sensitive businesses like restaurants, nursing homes, and other medical facilities. Flies carry and transfer bacteria and other pathogens on whatever they land on because they breed in disease-containing animal droppings and rotting garbage. Flies have unusually fast reproductive rates. A single female can lay hundreds of eggs at once, and almost one thousand eggs during her lifetime. These eggs, which look like small grains of rice, are extremely difficult to locate. Once deposited, it only takes a day for the eggs to hatch into maggots (fly larvae). The larvae feed for close to a week and then enter a pupal stage where the lowly maggot transforms into a fly.
What are the best methods to keep fly populations down? Businesses should start by making sure entry points like ripped screen windows are fixed and doors are kept closed. Also, food and food waste is a fly-attractant, so it is important to keep inside areas clean and nearby dumpsters closed with no exposed food. To reduce a fly infestation and to keep fly populations low, one of my favorite tools for a fly control program are decorative fly lights, otherwise known as Insect Light Traps (ILTs). These traps use ultraviolet light bulbs to draw in flies to a discreetly placed non-toxic sticky board inside. In the particular brand that we recommend, the patented green UV light bulbs have been shown to attract over 90% of the fly population hovering within 1000 square feet of the light. Also, the glue boards inside are scented with an insect pheromone that helps attract flies. I use these devices to not only trap these pests but also to monitor their activity level.
