Pests We Treat - Phorid Flies Attracted to Dirty Drains in Allentown, NJ
I am in Allentown where I have been dealing with an ongoing Phorid fly infestation with one of my commercial accounts. A number of small annoying gnats commonly breed in drains, including fruit flies, drain flies, and, what I’m dealing with now, Phorid flies. These particular flies are hunchbacked, and they do not like to stay airborne for long. Their flight is short and erratic. Instead, you’ll see them rapidly running across kitchen counters, windows, and other objects.
Why are certain flies attracted to drains? Drains are an ideal breeding environment for these pests because their fly larvae requires exactly what most drains offer — decaying organic matter and standing water. Unfortunately, these infestations can be stubborn. These pesky flies like to breed deep in the drains, and sometimes you have to really get deep in there to resolve the infestation. Also, once you get rid of the flies, it’s important, especially in restaurants and commercial kitchens, to periodically treat the drains to keep them clean and not provide them with the “drain crud” they need to breed.
To knock down this problem for good, I worked with the maintenance crew to snake out all of the drains. I wanted to make sure that the sanitizer foam and gel could reach those deep harborage areas where the flies were reproducing. Bio sanitizers have enzymes that dissolve the organic matter, the food source that fly larvae need. The bio gel breaks down the organic material over time, while the foam sanitizer further breaks down stubborn grease build-up in the drains. With these bio sanitizers applied deep in the drains, the Phorid fly larvae will be destroyed. it’s disgusting to see flies coming in and out of drains, especially in kitchens. With the deep application of these bio products, for these bugs, the game is over. They’ll have nowhere to hide, and they won’t be able to continue breeding.
