Pests We Treat - Carpenter Bees Attack Shed in Pine Beach, NJ
Have you ever come across a pile of sawdust, looked up and saw perfectly drilled holes the size of a dime? One possibility is that you do construction work in your sleep, drilling holes in wood around your home while in a state of deep slumber. However, the more likely scenario is that you've been invaded by carpenter bees. These bees are big and thick like bumblebees, but bore holes in wood like it was butter. To say that carpenter bees are destructive is an understatement. They can turn a 2 by 4 into scrap wood by drilling into the center of the wood and then making a 90 degree turn and traveling lengthwise, gutting it like fish. They have the strength to drill a hole four feet into the center of a tree. This video shows carpenter bee damage along the door frame of a shed and the insect-created sawdust known as "frass." Frass is a telltale sign of wood-destroying insects that bore into wood like carpenter ants and carpenter bees. Since subterranean termites digest wood, their frass is their pellet-shaped droppings.
