What Damage Do Stink Bugs Cause New Jersey Homes?
Stink bugs pose a significant threat to crops in Japan, and their presence has raised concerns in the agricultural sectors of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. As reported by Rutgers Agricultural Cooperative Extension, these pests have infested various plants, including ornamentals, fruit trees, legumes, and vegetables. They are particularly drawn to honeydew, tomatoes, beans, corn, squash, peppers, cabbage, and fruits. Using their proboscis to pierce and suck plant juices, stink bugs can cause substantial damage to backyard gardens, resulting in small necrotic areas on fruits' outer surfaces, seed loss, and the potential transmission of plant pathogens.
The stink bug is exclusively a plant feeder and will not bite humans or pets. However, once inside a home or building, they can become a nuisance and emit an offensive odor if disturbed or crushed. It seems that at least a few of these bugs have found their way into almost every home in New Jersey.
