Something Moving
As I was about to treat the railroad ties by the driveway, I noticed something in the mulch bed was "moving"
Thats What it Was
I took a closer look and found a large nest of citronella ants!
An Odd Odor
They are called citronella ants because they emit a strong citronella smell when they're startled or crushed. They're also yellow in color.
In Multiple Locations
Continuing my inspection I found the citronella ants gathering in three locations: down at the end of the driveway, at the beginning of the driveway, and throughout the mulch bed.
Time for Treatment
First, I treated the railroad ties and along the driveway with a liquid residual and then used an aerosol product with a straw attachment to treat inside of their nesting holes.
The Aerosol Product
The aerosol application will flush the ants out of hiding in the railroad ties as well as eliminate them almost immediately.
Baiting the Mulch Beds
Lastly, I applied a granular bait throughout the mulch bed.
Extermination of Citronella Ants
The citronella ants will come in contact with either of these products and unknowingly transfer it throughout their nest, by feeding or grooming one another. Soon, the entire colony will be eliminated.
