The female cicada killer burrows into the soil, preferring loose, sandy soil found along sidewalks and mulch beds, to create a chamber to lay her eggs. The male dies after mating while the female dies after tending to her larvae. The larvae build a cocoon and overwinter to the following summer season when they emerge to start the cycle over again.
