Dangling in the Trees
As I began inspecting the exterior of the building, I found the hornet's nest.
Bad Tempered Bald-Faced Hornets
Upon further inspection, it was found to be a very active and large bald-faced hornet's nest.
Prefer to Nest High
Bald-faced hornets build paper nests at least three or more feet off of the ground, usually in trees, shrubs, on overhangs, houses or other structures. These nests can be as large as 14 inches in diameter and more than 24 inches in length.
Using the Tree to Treat the Nest
I carefully approached the nest by using the branches of a nearby tree to rest an extendable B-pole with an aerosol attached. I placed the aerosol application inside of the entry point of the nest and applied it directly into the nest to immediately neutralize the hornets.
Treat and Remove Properly
After a few minutes, I removed the nest disposed of it properly. I also removed the branch the nest was attached to. If the branch is not removed or the area the nest was attached to is not treated correctly, hornets can return to the same spot and rebuild.
