Pests We Treat Photo Album: Cicada Killers Prey on Church in Rumson, NJ
While performing our monthly service at a church in Rumson, New Jersey, we noticed a cicada killer wasp activity in the grassy areas surrounding the church and rectory buildings.
What Do They Look Like
Cicada killers are a large species of wasp, between 2/3 and 3 inches in length, and are reddish-brown in color.
Big Bark, No Bite
Although these wasps are huge and look intimating, they are harmless. Female cicada killers do have a stinger that they use to paralyze their prey, but they aren't aggressive and will only attack if they are directly threatened.
Their Home is Close to Their Food Source
Female cicada killers dig their burrows in a well drained, light textured soil, that has full sunlight. Their burrows are primarily located near a cicada nest.
For Treatment
One of the most effective ways to eliminate the wasps is to treat each individual burrow with a residual dust application. This product gets on the wasp entering into and emerging from the burrow and immediately eliminates the cicada killers and their unhatched eggs.
