Shower Room Filled with Drain Flies in Whiting, NJ
Challenge
An owner of a health care facility in Whiting, NJ contacted our office after one of her workers had reported seeing large amounts of flies in the health care area. When we arrived and properly inspected the area, we identified these pests as drain flies. Drain flies, sometimes called sewer flies, are small, dark-winged, non-biting gnats. The key identifying trait for this fly is the unique pattern of veins in its wings. Their wings are covered with scales so they disappear in a cloud of fine dust when swatted or mashed. These pests feed off and lay their eggs in the accumulated "muck" (organic debris) that can coat drains if not periodically cleaned.
Solution
For treatment, we applied a liquid application in all the floor drains and then scrubbed them out with our heavy-duty scrubbing brush. Afterward, we applied a bio-foam solution in the drains, which removes all the organic build-up, odors, and scum inside them. Next, we treated the high infestation areas with a fly bait to control the adult drain flies still hovering around. Lastly, we spoke to the owner and suggested a few new and effective cleaning protocols to prevent any future drain fly issues.
