Restaurant Taken Over by Fruit Flies in Manahawkin, NJ
Challenge
We were sent to a restaurant in Manahawkin, NJ to handle a fruit fly infestation. Once we arrived, we noticed a large amount of fruit flies hovering around the bar area and the sink area. When we inspected those areas we discovered a massive amount of discarded food, garbage, sugary liquids, and fruit fly larvae inside the floor drains. Continuing our inspection, we also found a buildup of grease behind some kitchen equipment and even more in the trash room.
We immediately found the manager on duty and showed her these sanitation issues. We also told her that these sanitation issues were the source of the fruit fly problem and need to be cleaned ASAP. She and her staff agreed and began cleaning the restaurant from top to bottom.
Solution
While they were cleaning, we applied a liquid application in all the floor drains and then scrubbed them out with our heavy-duty scrubbing brush. Next, we applied a bio-foam solution in all the floor drains. This will remove all the organic build-up, odors, and scum in the drains that the fruit flies breed in. Afterward, we treated the high infestation areas with a fly bait to control the adult fruit flies that were flying around and then installed several fruit fly traps. The attractant in the traps draws the fruit flies close and the bait inside the traps exterminates them within moments of contact.
Lastly, we scheduled several follow-up visits to monitor the fruit fly activity and apply any additional treatments if required. Before we left, we spoke to the manager again and mentioned a few simple sanitation protocols to enforce with her staff in order to prevent any future fruit fly infestations as well as any other pest infestations.
