European Hornets Harboring in a Tree in Colts Neck, NJ
Challenge
A new customer in Colts Neck, NJ, frantically called our office after her dog was stung by hornets while playing near a tree in the backyard. Once we arrived and examined the area where the dog was attacked, we spotted a massive amount of hornets going in and out of a small opening in a tree. We took a closer look and identified them as European hornets.
European hornets are much larger than yellow jackets and, unlike most stinging insects, can be active at night. Their bodies are brown with yellow stripes on their abdomens and have pale faces. European hornets have long bodies and antennae and have two pairs of wings and six legs. They also eat tree sap, fruit and honeydew and can do a great deal of damage to trees and shrubs because they strip the bark to get to the sap. They also use the bark fiber to build their nests.
Solution
We treated the opening in the tree with a residual application. This product will rapidly exterminate the European hornets. Shortly after, we removed the nest that was inside the tree and disposed of it properly.
