European Hornets Getting into the Bedroom in Mantoloking, NJ
Challenge
Recently, we were sent out on a service call to a homeowner in Mantoloking, NJ who was having a problem with wasps entering her master bedroom. The homeowner thought they were yellow jackets, but after a close examination, they were actually European hornets. European hornets are social stinging insects, are much larger than yellow jackets, and, unlike most stinging insects, can be active at night. Their bodies are brown with yellow stripes on their abdomens, have pale faces, two pairs of wings, and six legs.
As we were inspecting the bedroom, we noticed a small hole in the ceiling that the European hornets were coming from. As a temporary solution, we duct taped the opening. Once the hornets are gone, the owner will patch it up. Afterward, we went outside and saw the hornets were entering the home by going under a trim board by the gutter.
Solution
We grabbed our extendable pole and our ladder, attached a knockdown dusting product to the pole, and treated the area. This will exterminate the European hornets almost immediately. We then went inside and vacuumed up all the terminated hornets in the master bedroom.
