European Hornets Inside Bobcat Excavator in Marlboro, NJ
Challenge
We were sent out to a business in Marlboro, NJ after the owner contacted our office complaining of wasps inside an excavator. When we arrived, the owner led us to the machine in question. Upon inspection, we noticed that there was a 3/4 inch hole in front of the machine that the insects were passing through and identified these stinging insects as European hornets. European hornets are much larger than yellow jackets and, unlike most stinging insects, can be active at night. Their bodies are brown with yellow stripes on their abdomens. They have pale faces, two pairs of wings, and six legs. Only the females can sting but only do so as a defensive measure, i.e. something that comes within close proximity to their nest.
Solution
First, we treated the hole with a knockdown aerosol application and then a knockdown liquid application. Both of these products rapidly exterminate the European hornets. Shortly after, we removed the nest that was inside the machine and properly disposed of it.
