Trees Hiding a Bald-Faced Hornets Nest in Rumson, NJ
Challenge
This homeowner in Rumson, NJ was enjoying a sunny day in her backyard, when all of a sudden, she noticed a hornets nest in her tree! Fearing that her children would get stung, she ran inside and called Cowleys. When we arrived we found the nest about 20 feet up in the tree. A closer look told us that these were bald-faced hornets.
Bald-faced hornets are social stinging insects that are a close relative to yellow jackets. The surface of their upper midsection almost looks triangular from the side, and they have white markings on their face. They are EXTREMELY aggressive and will not hesitate to sting anything that invades their space. Their stings carry venom that makes the stings hurt, itch, and swell for about 24 hours. Humans are at the same risk of allergic reactions from bald-faced hornet stings as with other insect stings.
Solution
Using our extendable pole, we treated the nest with a knockdown aerosol application and then a knockdown liquid product. Both of these treatments rapidly exterminate the bald-faced hornets. After several moments we removed the nest, and the branch it was attached to it, and disposed of them properly.
