Bald-Faced Hornets Exterminated in Freehold, NJ
Challenge
While I was treating this home in Freehold, NJ, I noticed a few flying hornets near a shrub in the backyard. I quickly equipped my bee suit, took a closer look, and identified these pests as bald-faced hornets.
Bald-faced hornets are social stinging insects that are a close relative to yellowjackets. The surface of their upper midsection almost looks triangular from the side, and they have white markings on their face. They are also EXTREMELY aggressive and will not hesitate to sting anything that invades their space. Their stings carry venom that makes the stings hurt, itch, and swell for about 24 hours. What makes them even scarier is that they have smooth stingers, which means they can sting over and over again, can actually sense vibrations in the air, and remember their invader's face!
Solution
I grabbed my extendable pole and treated the nest from a safe distance with an aerosol application, which will rapidly exterminate the bald-faced hornets. After a few moments, I then treated the nest with a knockdown liquid application. Once the bald-faced hornets are exterminated, I'll remove the nest as well as the attached branch and properly dispose of both of them.
