Leak in Ceiling Leads to Drain Flies in Howell, NJ
Challenge
While servicing this restaurant in Howell, NJ I came across a leak in the ceiling that was causing a rather large puddle on the floor. The water was actually pooling from the server's station to the kitchen and flowing into a floor drain. When I examined the drain, I noticed it was full of drain flies!
I immediately informed the owner who was unaware of the leak in the ceiling. Within minutes, he called an HVAC technician who was coming out that day to repair the leak and had his staff clean up the spill. While the staff was cleaning up, I went to work to remove the drain flies!
Solution
I scrubbed out the infested floor drain as well as every floor drain in the entire kitchen. After removing all the gunk, I sanitized the drain by applying a liquid application that removes the bad bacteria from the drain. Bad bacteria is the foundation for a drain fly's breeding ground. Eliminate the bad bacteria, and you eliminate their breeding habitat.
Next, I applied a bio-foam solution, which removes the organic build-up, odors, and scum in all the floor drains. Once I finished, I talked to the owner about implementing a few simple sanitation procedures that'll keep these pests out of his restaurant by not giving them the breeding materials they need to thrive. Once the leak is repaired and the new sanitation protocols are followed, the owner will no longer have any drain fly issues.
