Removal of a Yellowjackets Nest in Rumson, NJ
Challenge
One of Cowleys Home Protection Plan customers in Rumson, NJ contacted our office complaining of hornets near her bedroom window on the second story of her home. We arrived, equipped our bee suit, and began inspecting the roof. A few minutes into our inspection, we noticed a group of yellowjackets gathering near the soffit area. After a closer inspection, we discovered a yellowjackets nest underneath a corner of the dormer.
Yellowjackets received their name from their black and yellow color pattern banded across their abdomens. They are primarily flying insects, similar to bees, but are more noticeably segmented with a very small waist. Yellowjackets, wasps, and hornets may have similar characteristics, but they can be very different in their level of aggressiveness and their habits. They are extremely territorial and aggressive once someone or something comes close to their nest. They can sting multiple times, and their stings can be very painful. People who are allergic to their venom could have a severe reaction, and it is possible to become hypersensitive to yellowjackets after being stung. This sensitivity could cause a serious problem if stung again in the future.
Solution
For treatment, we flushed the area with an aerosol flusher that'll eliminate the hornets on contact. After a few minutes, we removed the nest and disposed of it properly. Finally, we treated the area with a residual dust application that'll prevent the yellowjackets or any other stinging insect from reestablishing a nest in the same area.
