Child in Fair Haven, NJ brings home bed bugs from sports camp.
Challenge
Recently, homeowners in Fair Haven, NJ found themselves with a bed bug infestation after their daughter came home from a sports camp with one more item than she started out with — bed bugs!
Parents whose children are coming home from college dorms or camp should be bed bug aware. As a precaution, all clothing should be washed in hot water and luggage and other belongings should be thoroughly inspected before even bringing into the house, then inspected thoroughly and packed away.
Solution
Here, during our inspection, it was quite easy to find the infestation. They were all over the bedding, patiently waiting for their next blood meal. We found them hiding in the bed frame, the headboard, and the support leads of the frame. This was a heavy infestation, and the number of visible eggs, for even someone like me that has performed innumerable bed bug treatments, was amazing.
An important part of successful bed bug treatment is vacuuming the harborage areas where the bed bugs are hiding. it is rare to find bed bugs in plain view. Between feedings, they look for tight nooks and crannies to hide. Through use of a HEPA vacuum is essential for a successful resolution of a bed bug infestation because you are physically removing the adults and eggs from the home without waiting for any applications to take effect. Still, for good measure, we always apply a residual product that will eliminate those bed bugs and that managed to escape the vacuum. Bed bugs are resilient, and elimination of these infestations can be challenging. We will work with these homeowners until the infestation is completely resolved and no one in the home wakes up with a new set of insect bites.
