Fly Mystery Solved in West Long Branch, NJ
Challenge
Recently, I was sent to a homeowner in West Long Branch, NJ who was dealing with a vexing fly problem in her den. She could not figure out where the flies were breeding and coming from since all of the window screens were in good shape and she did not leave any doors open. I was determined to figure out the mystery. During my inspection, I entered a meter room that she shared with her neighbor’s attached unit. The problem was that their recyclables were kept in the room, and apparently some of the cans and bottles were not a thoroughly cleaned as they needed to be. With a film of decaying food on some of the cans and bottles, it was a magnet for flies.
Solution
To resolve the fly infestation, I first applied a quick knockdown to eliminate the flies in the room. I then applied a fly biota around the doors and recycling cans. I altered both our customer and the neighbor that flies were breeding and living in their shared meter room, and that they needed to be careful about cleaning out any recyclables that they were temporarily storing for pick-up and preferably store them in sealed containers. Inevitably, with fly problems, there is some underlying sanitation issue that’s attracting the flies. Often, we find flies breeding around dumpsters and garbage/recycling areas. The flies then find entry points into nearby homes or other buildings.
