Fruit Flies Invade Marlboro, NJ Deli
Challenge
We received an emergency call from a deli in Marlboro, NJ. Their kitchen was overrun with fruit flies. When I arrived I entered thru the back and walked into a scene from Amityville Horror. Fruit flies lined the walls, the storage racks and around the sink areas. Fruit flies breed in rotting fruits and foods or other similar organic material. In warmer weather fruit flies breed more heavily.
Solution
I first installed fly lights in areas where the fruit flies would be most drawn to the lure. I also applied a fly bait that would give a quick knock down to the population. Then I addressed the drains and grease traps with a microbial cleaning foam. These areas can be a breeding site for fruit flies. Removal of a fruit fly infestation can be difficult at times. The fruit fly larvae may continue to hatch in nearby fruit or harbor areas even if the adult population has been eliminated. Proper sanitation and a pest management program in a kitchen can help prevent a fly infestation.
