Mice Infestation in Crawl Space of Howell, NJ home
Challenge
Recently, I was dispatched to a residence located in a homeowner’s association in Holmdel, NJ, that was serviced by Cowleys. The unit owner’s crawl space had a severe mouse infestation over the winter. Mice are one of the most common overwintering pests that look to enter our homes to escape the harsh outdoor elements. Crawl spaces are notorious trouble spots since they are often easy to access and homeowners are often unaware of problems that are lurking below.
Solution
For this crawl space clean out, I vacuumed all the droppings and then sanitized and deodorized the entire space. Even though the droppings are not in the living spaces of the home, when this waste is dried out and disturbed, particles can be released and travel on air currents throughout the entire home. Mouse droppings can contain many toxic pathogens including hantavirus. After a rodent infestation is identified, it is essential that the space be properly cleaned out for the health of the occupants. it is also important to remove any residual odors so new mice or other wildlife are not attracted to the area. I also identified and temporarily sealed the rodent entry point until the property manager could permanently fix it.
