Fruit flies Near the Bar in Rumson, NJ
Challenge
Fruit fly infestation in the bar area of this restaurant in Rumson, NJ. Because of all the sugar in the liquors, wines, and soda, many bars have issues with fruit flies year-round, but it can be worse in summer.
Pest control in commercial food establishments is critical and involves a series of steps including inspection, monitoring, treating/eliminating harborage areas for insects as well as applying our in-depth knowledge of insects and their habits and behavior. The most important thing to understand is that insects need shelter and moisture for survival, so sanitation plays a key role in preventing insect infestations. Cowleys was conducting our regular inspection, and was made aware of a fruit fly issue. Our detailed sanitation report included the following suggestions specifically for the bar area:
- Pour tops on liquor bottles must be covered overnight with cellophane or caps on the quick pour bottles.
- The soda gun holder must be cleaned.
- Areas around all drains must be cleaned and sealed.
These are essential because the sugary residue attracts fruit flies. Fruit flies will also breed in the tubing that goes into the floor drain.
Solution
Using a liquid application and a bio-foam solution, we removed all the organic buildup from the area. Next, we applied a growth regulator to the area that will interrupt the flies' reproduction cycle. Lastly, we scheduled several follow-up visits to monitor the infestation and, if necessary, apply any additional treatments until the building is free of fruit flies.
