Roach is Not a Synonym for Dirty

When a person hears the word cockroach, what comes to mind? Most likely, the word roach conjures up thoughts of houses that are dirty and not well maintained.  No one wants their house to be associated with that! But guess what, cockroaches can be found in clean homes too. Here are three steps you can take to help make sure roaches aren’t attracted to your clean home.

1. Have you looked carefully in the vanity under your bathroom sink, or the cabinet that holds the sink in your kitchen? Most of us open those cabinets, often to grab things we need, but never really inspect the cabinet itself. This is the time to take a more serious look at that space. Leaky pipes, even pipes with pinpoint leeks, can attracts roaches. Roaches can go several weeks without food, but only a few days without water. Cabinetry with a water source provides roaches with the perfect hiding space to live and breed. Damp, dark spaces with places to hide are a roach’s dream! If you find there is moisture in these cabinets from leaking pipes or pipes with condensation, don’t leave the repairs for another day. Take care of it as soon as possible.
2. Although roaches can go weeks without food, they thrive when there is a constant source of nourishment. Unfortunately, pet food can be an excellent source for roaches. Many of us have pets that prefer to graze on their food all day so our pet’s dry food is left in the bowl from morning until night. Even when we make sure that the food is in the bowl and there are no crumbs scattered around, this is an open invitation for roaches. According to the Whole Dog Journal, it is actually better for your dog to have a set feeding schedule and not have access to food all the time. You might want to consider only having food available at certain times of the day as a way to help your pet and your home.
3. Having items delivered via Amazon, FedEx, and other carriers is just part of our modern lives. Many of these packages come in cardboard boxes. The downside of cardboard boxes is roaches love them (especially if they are wet). Wet cardboard can supply a roach with food, water, and a place to lay their eggs. It may be rare for a roach to be delivered with a package, but it is not impossible. If you can, remove your items from the cardboard box outside and inspect both the items and the box to make sure you did not have any unwanted pest join your delivery.
