April Showers Bring May Flowers, and Mosquitoes Too.
Warm evenings sitting outside with a cool beverage, your friends and family enjoying their time with you. Sounds wonderful, right? Then, all of a sudden it happens, you hear the buzz of a mosquito and you know the party is over. These annoying insects can turn a dream evening into a nightmare with their blood thirsty little bodies! Many people think there is nothing you can do about a mosquito invasion, but they are wrong!
In order to keep mosquitos out of your back yard you need to know a little something about them. First, mosquitoes lay their eggs in water. They don’t need a whole pond’s worth of water for their nursery, in fact many mosquito eggs can be laid in just a quarter inch of water. A quarter inch of water can be found in items all over your yard. Look for water that has accumulated in flower pot saucers, fabric grill covers, and even tire swings. The top of a water bottle left outside to collect rain water can even be a mosquito nursery! Make sure to dump that water! There is also water that we want in our back yards, like bird bath water. Giving the birds a place to stop and drink is great, but in order to keep mosquitoes away, change the water in your bird bath frequently.
Constantly patrolling your yard for water may seem like a chore, so many people will simple let mosquitoes join their party and hope for the best. This is NOT a good idea. We may think of mosquitoes as an annoyance, but in fact they are a health problem too. Mosquito bites itch. These irritations can lead to people scratching their skin enough that it opens the skin to infection. That is not the only way mosquitoes create health problems. Did you know that some varieties can transmit West Nile Virus, dengue fever, and even canine heartworm?
