Beaver Floods Up Yard in Holmdel, NJ
Challenge
Recently, we were contacted by a homeowner in Holmdel, NJ who noticed a beaver dam in a residential pond near his home. Due to the dam, the water of the pond was rising and trickling onto the homeowner's property. It was only a matter of time until mud and debris spilled into the homeowner's pool and not only cause damage to the pool but flood the home.
Beavers are known as "nature's engineers" as they can construct dams over 10 feet high and up to 1600 feet long! The dam they build creates a pond in which the beaver family creates a little island known as a beaver lodge. The body of water surrounding the lodges provides protection from predators and beavers can enter and exit their new home in an underwater tunnel leading from the lodge to the pond. In deep or fast-moving water areas, beavers excavate into river banks and set up home there instead.
Solution
First, I unclogged the area and placed a trap where the dam was. As the beaver goes to repair/rebuild the damaged portion of the dam it goes right into our trap. Once the beaver is caught we follow the state and federal laws designed in the permits issued by the Fish and Game Administration.
