Squirrels Get Into the Attic Through the Gable Vents in Brick, NJ
A new customer in Brick, NJ, called our Nuisance Wildlife division needing help to remove a squirrel in his attic. Once we arrived and inspected the exterior of the home, we determined that the squirrel was entering the attic via the weathered gable vent. Nuisance wildlife infesting a home via the gable vents is very common. Over time, the gable vents get weathered and raccoons, squirrels, birds, and bats have no problem ripping away these vents to find shelter inside a home.
In order to safely retrieve the squirrel, we installed a one-way device over the main access point and temporarily enclosed it with hardware cloth. We also installed several baited devices nearby. The one-way is designed to allow the squirrel to safely leave the attic area, but prevent them from getting back in. A short while later, we successfully retrieved the squirrels and relocated them to a new, humane location.
Afterward, we disinfected the attic area, removed the broken gable vent and replaced it with a louvered vent guard. This material is made out of heavy-duty Galvannealed steel (which means it won't rust) and is customized to accommodate vents of all shapes and sizes. Now the home is properly protected from not just squirrels, but all nuisance wildlife and pests!
