Lots & Lots of Drain Flies
As we inspected the building, we found heavy drain fly activity in the classrooms, pantries, and the offices too. Drain flies, sometimes called sewer flies, are small, dark-winged, non-biting gnats. The key identifying trait for this fly is the unique pattern of veins in its wings. Their wings are covered with scales so they disappear in a cloud of fine dust when swatted or mashed. These pests feed off and lay their eggs in the accumulated "muck" (organic debris) that can coat drains if not periodically cleaned.
Coming from the Drains
We also noticed that there was a large accumulation of drain flies around several of the floor drains and sinks. The managers informed us that they don't use the sinks or drains that much. This made the water stay in the pipes longer, get stagnant, and attracted the drain flies!
Scrubbing & Cleaning
For treatment, we applied a liquid application in all the floor drains & sinks and then scrubbed them out with our heavy-duty scrubbing brush. Afterward, we applied a bio-foam solution in the drains, which removes all the organic build-up, odors, and scum inside them.
Fly Bait & Scheduled Several Follow Ups
Next, we treated the high infestation areas with a fly bait to control the adult drain flies still hovering around. Lastly, we scheduled several follow up inspections to monitor the infestation and apply any additional treatments if needed.
