After finding the odorous house ants on the kitchen counter, I followed their trail to an outside shower on the deck. I noticed that the ceiling had moisture damage and as I took a closer look, I found the ants crawling on the ceiling.

Found Their Main Nest

I pulled back the shingles on the roof and found their main nest. There were thousands of ants and egg capsules.

Entomology of Odorous House Ants

Odorous house ants got their funny name because once they are crushed or startled, they emit a rotten, coconut smell. They are usually brown or black in color and range in size from 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch.

Get to Treating

I immediately started applying a residual dust application to the area that'll rapidly eliminate the nest.

Two More Treatments

I also applied an aerosol application and treated the deck area, kitchen, and the entire foundation of the home with a liquid non-repellant.

No More Smelly Ants

When the odorous house ants come in contact with any of these treatments, they'll bring it back to their nest and transfer it among one another, through feeding or grooming. In a short amount of time, the entire colony is neutralized.
