Pests We Treat Photo Album: Not Termites, But Carpenter Ants in Lacey Township, NJ
A concerned homeowner in Lacey Township, NJ thought that he had termites in his living room and called us to treat. After a close inspection, we identified them as the OTHER wood-destroying pests — carpenter ants!
Those Aren't Termites
As I inspected the living room window, I realized that these aren't termites, but carpenter ants. Carpenters ants don't eat wood like termites do, but instead tunnel through it to create nests.
How to Tell the Difference
An easy way to distinguish the difference between the two is a termite has a two body segment, a head and waist, while ants have a three body segment; a head, thorax, and abdomen.
Carpenter Ant Treatment
I applied a liquid residual along the window frame and throughout the living room. Next, I treated along the entire exterior with a granular bait.
Transfer Effect
When the carpenter ants come in contact with either of these treatments, they'll bring it back to their nest and share it with the other ants in the colony, including their queen, through grooming or feeding one another. This is what we call the "transfer effect." Soon, the entire colony will be exterminated.
Sealed Up the Windows
While the homeowner was waiting for a contractor to repair his windows, I applied a waterproof, premium adhesive to all the windows.
