Circling Around the Floor Drain
As I investigated the sink area, I noticed the fruit flies were hovering around the floor drain. A majority of the time, fruit flies will hover around the main infestation area.
Under the Lip
I took a closer look and found fruit fly pupae under the lip of the floor drain.
The Tile Too
I also found more pupae in the cracks in the tile. Fruit flies are drawn to food waste and moist environments. The combination of the abundance of moisture on the floor and the gunk inside the drain created the perfect harborage area for the fruit flies to thrive.
Fix the Damage
I advised the manager to replace the floor drain and repair the tiles as well as any leaking pipes in the area, to which he agreed. In order to eliminate the current infestation, I scrubbed out all the drains in the area and treated them with a liquid product that removes the bad bacteria, which is the breeding ground for the fruit flies.
Scrubbed and Baited
Next, I treated the drain and tiles with a bio foam solution that eliminates all fly-attracting odors. Finally, I applied a fly bait product around the area to eliminate the mature, active drain flies.
