In the Shower
I inspected the room and didn't find any activity of flies. However, as soon as I started cleaning the drain in the shower stall, drain flies started flying right at my face!
Been There For a Long Time
I took the cover off the drain on the floor and inspected. To my surprise I found a build up dirty water that has been sitting there for quite some time.
Drain Flies
Drain flies, also known as moth flies, are small flies, about 1/8 of an inch. They have short fuzzy bodies and oversized wings with noticeable veins that gives them a "furry" moth-like appearance. These flies breed and feed off accumulated organic matter (what most of us call "muck" or "gunk") inside moist drains, sewers, and septic tanks.
Scrub That Gunk Out!
First, I used a heavy-duty brush to thoroughly scrub the drain. This takes away the attractant for the drain flies.
Remove Their Foundation
After scrubbing, I sanitized the drain by applying a liquid application that removes the bad bacteria from the drain. Bad bacteria is the foundation for a drain fly's breeding ground. Once the breeding source is eliminated, the adult fly population soon drops.
Bio Foam
Lastly, I applied a bio foam that effectively removes the organic build-up in drain and suffocates the fly larvae. I spoke to the manager about implementing a new sanitation protocol to prevent future drain fly infestations.
