A new customer in Manasquan, NJ needed our help with a problem she had in her basement with camel crickets, otherwise known as "sprickets."

Is That Mold?

After inspecting the first floor and finding nothing, I inspected the basement and didn't find anything until I came to this wall that had mold on it. As I got the closer, the mold started moving. I realized that this was one big gathering of camel crickets!

Camel crickets are also called cave crickets or most notoriously "sprickets." Although people may think the these pests are related to spiders, they are not part of the arachnid family.

What Attracts Them?

Camel crickets reside in areas that are moist and dark, much like a cave. If there is an abundance of moisture in a basement or crawl space, which there was in this homeowners basement, you can expect an infestation of camel crickets.

Surprisingly Not Dangerous

Camel crickets look like something out of a horror movie, but honestly, they are harmless. Their only means of defense is to jump at predators to scare them off. They don't pose any health threats to people and they don't have fangs or the ability to bite.

I treated the giant mass gathering of camel crickets as well as every square inch of the basement with a liquid residual application.

Once the camel crickets come in contact with this application they'll ingest it, by grooming themselves, and in a short amount of time, will be eliminated. As far as the moisture issue goes, the homeowner purchased one of our Sedona dehumidifiers to resolve that issue.
