Pests We Treat Photo Album: Webbing Case Moths n Middletown, NJ
I just recently went to an apartment in Middletown, NJ that was having an issue with webbing case moths.
Cashmere Causing Choas
As I inspected, I discovered that the homeowner had some sweaters that were made out of cashmere that were damaged by webbing case moths. This type of moth can damage certain fabrics, mostly wool or cashmere items. Adult webbing clothes moths are a uniform, buff-color, with a small tuft of reddish hairs on the top of their head.
Proper Storage is Key
I advised the homeowner that seasonal apparel has to be protected by storing wool and cashmere sweaters in zip-up garment bags. Damage generally appears in hidden areas such as beneath collars or cuffs of clothing, in crevices of upholstered furniture, and in carpeted areas beneath the furniture. Clothing can be salvaged if the infestation is small, which luckily for this homeowner it was.
Pheromone Traps
I placed several pheromone traps in the closets to monitor this moth activity. The pheromone in the traps attracts the moths into the trap where they get stuck.
Stop the Reproduction
Additionally, I placed Gentrol point source stations in the closet. This station delivers a growth regulator to stop the moths from reproducing.
Crack & Crevice Treatment
I also performed a crack and crevice treatment to the harborage areas with a liquid application. Once finished I told the homeowner that the items that were damaged by the moths should be laundered and repaired and then placed in protective garment bags to protect them.
