Pests We Treat Photo Album: Bark Beetles in Aura Fly Light in Belmar, NJ
On a recent service call for one of our commercial accounts in Belmar, NJ we discovered an interesting pest in one of our glue traps.
Our Fly Defense Program
I went on a service call for one of our commercial accounts who had a Fly Defense program. Our Fly Defense service is a year-round treatment plan to identify and treat problem areas of a restaurant for flying pests. In addition to eliminating breeding sites, we use fly traps in these accounts to catch unwanted flying insects, such as filth flies, fruit flies, drain flies and gnats. Flytraps consists of an Ultra Violet bulb, which attracts the insects, and a glue board where the insects get trapped.
Odd Beetles
As I was servicing the fly light, I came across small oval insects stuck all over the glue board. Upon inspection, I identified them as bark beetles.
Bark Beetles? What are They?
Bark beetles are tiny insects with hard, cylindrical bodies that reproduce under the bark of trees and attack and kill live trees. Most species of bark beetles live in dead, weakened, or dying trees.
That was the Source
After noticing that the fly light is mounted approximately 5 feet from a pile of firewood used in the restaurant, we were able to determine that this was the source of the infestation. I mentioned this to the owner who immediately discarded all of the firewood properly. Once the source of the infestation is removed the pests are eliminated as well. Just to be thorough, I applied a liquid application to all the cracks, crevices, and baseboards throughout the property.
