Pests We Treat Photo Album: "Cleaned" Drains are Deceiving in Sea Girt, NJ
“Why am I seeing so many small flies in my kitchen?”
I happen to get this question a lot when I’m servicing residential homes. Everything usually appears to be clean, no fruit left out or any other decaying organic matter for them to feed on. To the untrained eye, it doesn’t make any sense. It can also be extremely frustrating to keep seeing them flutter around your sink. For one of our residential clients in Sea Girt NJ, this was her dilemma.
Looks are Deceiving
When I arrived I decided to take a closer look at the sink and that's where things got interesting. Many homes have an InSinkErator garbage disposal which is very difficult to clean yet looks sanitary to the naked eye. Once I began poking and prodding I found a sludge built up under the rubber flaps and in the unit itself.
She Was Quite Upset
When the homeowner saw what I found she was horrified. She had no idea what was lurking underneath. I told her that her fruit flies live and breed in the muck build-up inside drains. Without proper sanitation, the infestation can get out of control fast.
Scrub a Dub-Dub
I scrubbed the drains and then applied a bio-foam solution. This solution breaks down the decaying organic matter with powerful enzymes, sanitizing the drain.
Helpful Advise
I also advised her to, in order to prevent future infestations, clean the unit often with whatever the manufacturer recommends. Just because something appears to be clean, doesn't mean we won't find any pests.
