Pests We Treat Photo Album: Treating Cicada Killer Wasps in Toms River, NJ
Recently, we were dispatched to one of Cowleys commercial accounts, a community center in Toms River, NJ. The property manager had reported a large number of "giant bees" circling the parking lot. We equipped my bee suit and began inspecting the area and discovered that these "giant bees" were cicada killer wasps.
Large Infestation
When we arrived we saw at least 20 cicada killer wasps hovering around a sidewalk by the parking lot. Cicada killers wasps kill cicadas (hence their name). The adult female will paralyze the cicada with her stinger, carry the cicada to a burrow, and lay eggs under the left or right second leg of the cicada. The egg then hatches and the larvae begin to eat the cicada while it is paralyzed.
Large, But Not Aggressive
Cicada killer wasps may appear large and intimidating, but they are not at all aggressive unless you directly handle them. In fact, you can walk through a field of cicada killers and not get stung.
Treat their Burrows
For treatment, we treated each burrow with a direct contact dust application.
Contact Application
The cicada killers will come in contact with this application and groom themselves and each other to try to remove it. By doing this they ingest the application and in short amount of time, they are eliminated.
