Pests We Treat Photo Album: Massive Termite Swarm in Ocean Township, NJ
Recently, a frantic business owner in Ocean Township, NJ called Cowleys to treat a massive termite infestation in his office. Once I arrived, I inspected his office and immediately found termites emerging from a window sill. A closer inspection revealed that these were termite swarmers. Termite swarmers are yellow to black, have a beaded antenna, and a two-body segment — a head and a waist.
I continued to inspect the entire interior and exterior of the home to find any additional termite infested areas, to which I found none.
Termite Swarmers
As soon as I began my inspection in the office, I found a massive termite swarmer infestation. Termite swarmers are winged termites whose main role in life is to reproduce and create new termite colonies. In order to find a mate, these future termite kings and queens will swarm to find suitable locations for their colonies.
Exit Holes in Window Sill
When termites swarm indoors, they will come out of walls or wooden construction (baseboards, door frames, posts, etc.) through small holes. These are called "exit holes" and were created by worker termites. Swarming termites will fly toward a light source, typically collecting around windows and sliding glass doors.
A Pile of Eliminated Termites
If termite swarmers cannot find moist soil, they will die within a few hours from dehydration.
Treatment Time
In order to eliminate the termites, I performed a spot treatment with an injection foaming solution to the office wall where the main termite activity was present. I then injected a liquid application along the entire permiter of the home. Both the foaming solution and the liquid application binds to the treated soil and creates a protective zone that termites cannot detect. Termites will either ingest the application or come in contact with it as they go about their normal routines. Once termites come in contact with either the solution or the application, they'll transfer it to other termites in the colony. Within a short amount of time, the termites are eliminated.
The business owner informed me that he will have a contractor come and replace the window sill in his office. I scheduled a follow up inspection to make sure that the termites are gone for good and apply any additional treatment if needed.
