Digger Bees Populate the Backyard in Freehold, NJ
Challenge
A new customer in Freehold, NJ contacted Cowleys after seeing "thousands of bees" hovering around her backyard. As we inspected the backyard and took a closer look at these bees, we identified them as digger bees.
Digger bees, also called mining bees, are about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch long and typically nest in areas of the landscape where the grass is sparse or very thin. Digger bees are solitary bees that live one colony per hole and although the venom from a digger bee sting is strong enough to cause a severe allergic reaction in some people, they aren't aggressive. In fact, they usually only sting if they are being stepped on or directly handled. However, you still need to be very carefully when dealing with them.
Solution
The first thing we did was apply a granular bait to every single digger bee mound. Once we finished we that, we then injected a residual dusting application into each one. Both of these treatments will exterminate the digger bees in a short amount of time.
