Gunk Behind the Trash Can Attracts Fruit Flies in Neshanic Station, NJ
Challenge
While we were treating this commercial establishment in Neshanic Station, NJ, we came across a large number of fruit flies that were seen coming from under the bar. Once we moved the trash can and bottles from the area, we observed a large pile of food and debris that the bartenders had left behind the trash can.
One of the key elements of controlling fruit flies is sanitation. Bioremediation and other product applications will not be successful without the cooperation from the customer in keeping the areas clean, dry, and free of food debris. We brought this to the manager and bartenders attention and suggested a few simple cleaning procedures that will drastically reduce the fruit fly population as well as prevent any future pest issues.
Solution
After the staff cleaned the area, at the request of the manager, we applied a liquid application in all the drains in the bar area and then scrubbed them out with our heavy-duty scrubber. Next, we applied a bio-foam solution that removes the organic build-up, odors, and scum in the drains. Lastly, we treated the infestation areas with a fly bait to control the adult fruit flies
