Broken Pipe Home for Drain Flies in Manasquan, NJ
Challenge
As this homeowner in Manasquan, NJ was renovating his kitchen floor, he came across a large pipe that was broken. This caused a backup of waste and the perfect condition for drain flies to flourish. He then called Cowleys and we were sent out to inspect and treat.
Drain flies, sometimes called sewer flies, are small, dark-winged, non-biting gnats. The key identifying trait for this fly is the unique pattern of veins in its wings. Their wings are covered with scales so they disappear in a cloud of fine dust when swatted or mashed. These pests feed off and lay their eggs in the accumulated "muck" (organic debris) that can coat drains if not periodically cleaned.
Solution
Before we started our treatment, the owner told us that he scheduled an appointment with his plumber, who will be out later that day to fix the pipe. In the meantime, we treated the pipe with a liquid product that removes the bad bacteria, which is the breeding ground for the drain flies. Next, we treated it with a bio-foam solution that eliminates all fly-attracting odors. Lastly, we applied a fly bait product around the area to eliminate the active drain flies.
