Fruit Flies Behind the Bar in Holmdel, NJ
Challenge
A new customer who owns a restaurant in Holmdel, NJ, recently contacted our office after noticing an unusually high number of flies near the bar area. So we were sent out to inspect and treat. During our inspection, we noticed several flies harboring behind the bar near a particular floor drain. Upon closer investigation, we identified these pests as dark-eyed fruit flies and noticed that the floor drain was dirty and full of discarded debris.
Dark-eyed fruit flies are brown with dark eyes and are a little more difficult to control than regular fruit flies. They thrive in moist, smelly organic debris that is out of sight. They are most common in bars, restaurants, and delis where they breed under equipment, near drains, sinks, and beverage taps where water can settle and allow a buildup of organic matter.
Solution
First, we applied a liquid application in the floor drain and then scrubbed it out with our heavy-duty brush. Next, we applied a bio-foam solution that removes the organic build-up, odors, and scum in the drains. Lastly, we treated the area with a fly bait to control the adult fruit flies. At the request of the owner, we repeated this process to every single floor drain in the restaurant.
Once we finished, we spoke to the owner and mentioned a few, simple sanitation protocols that will prevent any future pest issues. Maintaining proper sanitation in your home or business is a great way to prevent pests, like fruit flies, from infesting your building. However, a poor sanitation program always increases the risk of major and expensive pest issues.
