A/C Leak & Dirty Floor Drain Contribute to Fruit Fly Infestation in Allenwood, NJ
Challenge
Recently, we were sent out to a restaurant in Allenwood, NJ to handle a fruit fly infestation. The source of the infestation was two dirty floor drains in the sink room. Fruit flies thrive in moist, smelly organic debris and breed in areas where water can settle and allow a buildup of organic matter.
Continuing our inspection, we noticed that the A/C unit in the stock room was leaking and causing a large amount of water to pool in the area. We spoke to the owner and told him that this needs to be fixed immediately or else he will continue to have pest problems in his restaurant. We were happy to see the owner call a contractor to fix it and have his staff mop up the area.
Solution
First, we applied a liquid product that removes the bad bacteria from the drains and scrubbed them out. The bad bacteria is the breeding ground for the fruit flies. Once that is eliminated, so are the fruit flies. Next, we treated the drains with a bio-foam solution that eliminates all fly-attracting odors. Lastly, we applied a fly bait product around the area to eliminate any active fruit flies.
As a precaution, we repeated these steps to every single floor drain throughout the restaurant. Before we left, we suggested a few simple sanitation procedures to the owner in order to prevent future fruit fly or any other pest infestations.
