Crawl Space Encapsulation in Rumson, NJ
Challenge
This homeowner in Rumson, NJ was having a serious buildup of moisture in his crawl space and was terrified that mold could develop, so he called Cowleys and our Contracting Division was sent out to inspect and remedy the problem.
After a full inspection, we determined that the reason for the moisture buildup was because the current sump pump was broken and the crawl space had a dirt floor. Dirt floor crawl spaces attract and absorb moisture and once the dirt dries, it causes humidity levels to rise and can lead to mold and mildew issues (fortunately, there was no mold or mildew in the crawl space).
Solution
First, we removed all of the debris out of the crawl space, leveled it, and installed a dimpled plastic drainage matting. This allows all excess moisture to work its way over to the new sump pump we installed. Next, we installed our vapor barrier — which is a heavy-duty material that is treated with an antimicrobial finish that protects against mold and mildew growth and is a 20-mil 7-ply sandwich of high and low-density polyethylene with a polyester-cord reinforcement.
Afterward, we installed SilverGlo™ along the walls of the crawl space. SilverGlo™ is a durable and waterproof rigid foam insulation that seals the walls from outside moisture and humidity. Next, we installed a Sedona dehumidifier. These commercial dehumidifiers are specially made for the high humidity levels in crawl spaces and basements and direct the extracted water pulled out of the air into the newly installed sump pump. Now the homeowner will no longer have any moisture issues in his crawl space.
